Church Fathers

On the Incarnation

by Athanasius of Alexandria

Included Formats

$40.00

Written in the fourth century as the Church clarified its confession of Christ, On the Incarnation is Athanasius's luminous account of why the Word became flesh. Against any faith that would reduce Jesus to a teacher, messenger, or created power, Athanasius shows that only God himself can restore what sin and death have corrupted. The eternal Word enters creation, assumes real humanity, conquers death from within, and reveals the Father in the visible life of the Son. This is one of the most important works of Christian theology ever written because it is also one of the clearest. Athanasius does not begin with abstraction. He begins with the human condition: corruption, mortality, idolatry, and the loss of the knowledge of God. The Incarnation is God's answer to all of it. Christ becomes what we are so that we may be healed, renewed, and brought back to communion with God. On the Incarnation is brief, bold, and astonishingly fresh. It is a book about the logic of salvation, the defeat of death, and the mercy of the Word who made the world and then entered it to save it.
