St. Gregory Nazianzen
Gregory Nazianzen was one of the three Cappadocian Fathers and one of the Church's great theologians of the Trinity. Formed in classical learning and bound by deep friendship to Basil the Great, Gregory became bishop during the long struggle to secure the Nicene confession against Arian and semi-Arian alternatives. His preaching in Constantinople helped restore the city's Nicene witness and gave the Church some of its most precise and beautiful language for speaking of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Schaff's volume presents him as a master of theological oratory, contemplative depth, and doctrinal precision.
