El Greco
1541 – 1614
El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos on Crete, became one of the most distinctive painters of late Renaissance Spain. Trained first in the Byzantine icon tradition and later active in Venice, Rome, and Toledo, he fused elongated figures, visionary color, and intense devotional drama into a style uniquely suited to sacred subjects.
